News 12 Networks is the first, largest and most watched 24-hour local television news network in the country, with seven individual local news channels and five traffic and weather channels serving Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester, Hudson Valley, the Bronx, and Brooklyn.

News 12 Long Island offers students a variety of editorial internship opportunities depending on their area of interest. The following positions are offered:

Production Assistant- As a Production Assistant intern the student will learn the skills required to be an effective production assistant, including how to research, pull file tape, check wires for stories, run the teleprompter and how to rip and distribute scripts. In addition, the intern will learn how to book, schedule, meet and greet guests. They attend the daily editorial meetings and learn how stories are reviewed and selections for coverage are made.

Reporter Assistant- Reporter Assistant interns will receive real-world training on how to be a reporter. Students will learn how to effectively make and take phone calls on possible stories; how to conduct preliminary research of future stories; locating and logging tapes; keeping track of scripts; monitoring feeds for possible story ideas; handling tape and script requests. Interns may also shadow experienced reporters in the field on shoots to learn how to effectively put a story together.

Assignment Desk - As an assignment desk intern, the student will gain hands-on experience and training in the operations of the assignment desk, including training regarding how to handle phone-in story tips; how to direct leads; opening and filing mail-in story tips; how to maintain daily scheduling logs and how to monitor the police radio scanner. Intern instruction will be from the Assignment Desk Editors on that shift.

This is a Summer internship. To be eligible for this internship, you must be able to receive college credit. This internship is unpaid.
