Job Summary

A principal engineer uses technical and administrative skills to oversee and complete engineering projects. Performs advanced engineering tasks or other special projects requiring original concepts, extensive experience, and expertise necessary for the operation of the data, video, voice, and security platforms. Has a management skill for facilitation of team actions for problem solving including conflict resolution to assure progress. Generally, works with wide latitude for autonomous action or decision. Management responsibilities include coordinating the activities of the design project staff which can include resolving engineering design and test problems, evaluating and approving changes and specifications. The principal engineer conceptualizes the initial implementation design specifications for each project. This involves working with other departments within an organization to establish user or customer requirements, project costs and resources. Along with the initial design of the project, a principal engineer also works on the design throughout the project. This individual will also be integral to support the key functions of the Infrastructure Engineering organization to maintain, operate and optimize key infrastructure components. Principal Engineer must have the ability to understand how technical solution/design contributes to the company financial aspects - capital and expense.

Responsibilities

Works independently, performs engineering tasks with little or no precedence, acts as an advisor to supervisor/management.
Principal Engineer is responsible for overseeing production technology testing/interoperation, automation, new technology integration and scale
Develop and implement infrastructure automation process and procedure that can be replicated and scale to deliver our services.
Develop meaningful business continuity plans and methods for protection and recovery of infrastructure. Implement procedures that will enable critical infrastructure to recover in the event of a disaster or disruption
Represent the organization in outside discussions and technical forums
Develop ways or method to improve existing design or solution to improve reliability, provides better customer experience and improve cost structure - i.e. capital or expense savings
Contribute to the Company vision of being the industry leader in customer service through quality, commitment, courtesy, and teamwork
Works with multi-disciplined team members related to design, integration, deployment and maintenance of the voice, video, or data network platforms
Contribute to the technical understanding and promotion of new and existing and business requirements, solutions, and tools with respect to Altice USA services delivery system
Understanding product development cycle and practices with hands-on experience in building and verifying designs
Performs design related to products and systems including development of new products or updates to existing products
Coordinates with equipment vendors to ensure hardware and software meet requirements for testing and deployment
Review and modify vendor design and architecture to ensure digital video systems meet technical and business requirements.
Provides clear and concise recommendations and guidance, both written and verbal, to business and technology personnel
Performs other duties as requested by supervisor

Qualifications

Bachelor or master’s degree in engineering or related field, or related technical experience/certification
12 years service provider technical experience
10 years data center, Voice,video,security,and networking experience

Expert level knowledge:

Service Provider and Enterprise network infrastructure
Routing protocols - BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VXLAN/EVPN

Experience with:

Packet analysis and troubleshooting TCP/IP connections
Design and deployment of virtualized Data Center networks utilizing Cisco ACI
Nexus 9k platforms and VMWare integrations
F5 load balancer and Checkpoint firewalls
Linux system administration
Scripting–BASH, Python
DNS, HTTP, LDAP, SMTP and SNMP

Knowledge of:

Private cloud infrastructure–Openstack,VMWare
Containerization–docker, Kubernetes
Network design, architecture, security, protocols, and topology
CPE, including digital set-top middleware and applications
IPv4 and IPv6, IP routing, Ethernet, and Transport protocols

Ability to:

Communicate orally and in writing in a clear and straightforward manner
Perform duties in a fast-paced environment and ability to learn new technology
Communicate with all levels of management and company personnel
Isolate and troubleshoot failed equipment
Make decisions and solve problems while working under pressure
