Job Summary
The Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Manager IP Network leads a team of engineers focused on enhancing the reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency of IP-based network systems. This role bridges traditional network engineering with modern software-driven reliability practices. The ideal candidate brings experience managing hybrid teams responsible for core routing, peering, edge architecture, and traffic engineering, while embedding site reliability principles across the IP infrastructure.
As the IP SRE Manager, you’ll drive incident response strategies, promote proactive automation to reduce manual interventions, and work closely with architecture and NOC teams to ensure seamless service availability across backbone and access layers. You will also oversee the implementation of observability platforms, capacity planning frameworks, and infrastructure as code to modernize network operations.
Responsibilities
- Lead a cross-functional team of SREs focused on IP transport, edge, and core networking.
- Define and monitor Service Level Objectives (SLOs), SLAs, and Error Budgets for IP services.
- Oversee complex incident response and postmortem processes for network outages or performance degradations.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, automation, and technical excellence.
- Collaborate with network architects and platform teams to guide resilient system design.
- Introduce observability enhancements to monitor routing health, latency, jitter, and packet loss.
- Drive automation for provisioning, configuration validation, and traffic rerouting (BGP, OSPF, MPLS).
- Support infrastructure modernization (IPv6 adoption, segment routing, SDN transitions).
- Mentor engineers and lead hiring, performance reviews, and career development paths.
- Maintain compliance with security standards and operational governance across IP infrastructure.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent (Master’s preferred).
- 7+ years of experience in IP network engineering or site reliability.
- 3+ years in a technical leadership or people management position.
- Proven track record managing high-scale IP/MPLS backbones and service provider networks.
- Experience supporting services such as BNG, CGNAT, L2VPN, L3VPN, and multicast over IP.
- Familiarity with cloud-native networking and SDN/NFV architectures (preferred).
Technical Expertise
- Understanding of core routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, RSVP).
- Hands-on experience with backbone and edge routers (Cisco, Juniper, Nokia, Arista).
- Strong familiarity with network automation frameworks (Ansible, Netconf/YANG, Python).
- Skilled in monitoring tools and telemetry platforms (ThousandEyes, Prometheus, SNMP traps, Flow tools).
- Experience in traffic engineering, peering policy management, and failover strategies.
- Cloud networking (VPCs, Direct Connect, Transit Gateway) is a plus.
- Strong troubleshooting skills using packet capture, route analysis, and telemetry correlation tools.
Leadership & Communications
- Ability to lead distributed teams and drive complex network reliability programs.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and cross-functional influence skills.
- Strong problem-solving mindset with a focus on reducing MTTR and improving operational KPIs.
- Experience managing on-call rotations and conducting operational readiness reviews.
