Job Summary
Lightpath is looking for a Network Engineer to design, implement, maintain, and support our fast-growing network infrastructure. The Engineer will be part of a team that is responsible for designing and developing scalable, maintainable, highly available network architecture that meet business objectives and SLAs. The Engineer will track CAPEX projects for network augment capacity regarding schedule and costs. The Network Engineer will handle designing, installing, configuring, and supporting network hardware and software to ensure network availability. The Network Engineer is responsible for ensuring that networks have maximum uptime, providing fast and reliable connectivity across the regional network. The Engineer must have technical knowledge, written communication abilities, problem-solving skills to maximize network efficiency and uptime.
Key Business Relations
- The Network Engineer will work closely with all related management teams to fulfill business requirements and contribute to successful implementation of policy and procedures on an ongoing basis.
- The Network Engineer will work with:
- Technologies planning to coordinate and optimize network augments, create and execute on MOP’s and Scopes of Work, and Engineer to a broadly communicated Plan.
- Circuit Design – to coordinate complex Network designs into flawless Circuit Designs.
- Transport Network Engineering and Capacity Management - to ensure that all assumptions are fully tested and so that Capacity augments and Network expansions are fully vetted and proper information is considered for all necessary investment decisions.
- Sales Engineering - to ensure that all Large-Scale Projects and opportunities are considered, to optimize CAPEX investment, leverage economies of scale, and spot all trends that result in the best engineered design and cost. Also – to educate and train SE team on Engineering Standards and capabilities.
- Product – receive and understand the full intent of the Product document. Work with the vendor community to develop a network architecture based on currently available vendor solutions with Lightpath best engineering practices including cost.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain Metro-Ethernet/IP regional network, which include MPLS, MP-BGP, OSPF, Layer II & Layer III VPN technologies
- Trigger core capacity augments in a timely manner to ensure that the capacity is ready when customer demand materializes
- Engineer and design Network Design Packages for customer services, network augments, build outs and equipment installations
- Prepare Engineering Cost and Planning estimates & Projections for Large Scale Projects and Customer Solutions
- Collaborate with Sales Engineering on proposed customer network design and RFP’s and ensure that the proposed design will meet the customer’s requirement in a cost-effective manner
- Analyze the core network for opportunities to optimize the core network to yield efficiencies and economies of scale and avoid or delay future capital expenditures.
- Optimize and consolidate CAPEX Augments to realize network efficiencies and economies of scale regarding Facilities
- Collaborate with internal business units on planning and design standards for existing and new networks
- Review and evaluate new equipment and technologies, software releases and document procedure to progress the core network. Provide standards and procedures and communicate them to the business units
- Provide Out-of-Hour support to Fulfillment and Support organizations (On-Call support) if necessary
- Prepare presentations and perform knowledge share sessions with various business units and team members
- Establish and create equipment standard deployment rule sets and requirements documents
- Maintain relationships with equipment suppliers, industry research departments to keep up knowledge on technological roadmaps
- Collaborate with vendors to ensure network resources are at latest equipment and software release
- Responsible for the support of legacy technologies and their alternative replacement when needed. Also, develop and project manage programmed circuit migrations to improve the state of the core network.
Qualifications
- BS Degree - Engineering/Telecommunications/Computer Science + CCNA or higher certification
- 2+ Years of Network Engineering experience
Required Skills:
Extensive and demonstrable knowledge of MP-BGP, OSPF, MPLS, TCP/IP required
Proficient at troubleshooting L2/L3 issues required
AWS Direct Connect Services knowledge and experience desired
Python, Golang, Perl, Bash scripting language experience desired
Working knowledge and experience with Cisco ASR/NCS platforms. Knowledge of JunOS is a plus
Knowledge of MEF and CE2.0 Ethernet products and standards, including y.1731 statistics collection, y.1564 testing, Ethernet, IGPs, bridging, routing, and switching
Systems and Software Knowledge:
Experience with Netcracker or similar Planning and Provisioning tool
Knowledge and working experience with Cisco Prime or NSO desired
Knowledge of SevOne Performance Management tool or equivalent
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Streets & Trips, Visio & various operational Support Systems for internal and external presentations and complex network schematics
